Climate Resilience Framework

Our Institutionalized Climate Strategy

We have embedded climate resilience into the heart of our operational DNA. This multi-tiered strategic framework ensures that climate risk management is not an elective process but a fundamental component of our lending model across three core pillars:

Pillar I: Operational Risk Integration – We have integrated hazard screening and localized climate data into our primary credit appraisal process. Every loan application undergoes a mandatory climate vulnerability assessment at the first point of contact to ensure asset durability.

Pillar II: Institutional Intelligence & Green Tagging – By 2027-28, VHFL will be implementing a Climate Resilience Assessment Scoring Framework that will enable us to systematically classify and 'green-tag' our portfolio. This system provides real-time visibility into the resilience performance of our assets, allowing for data-driven risk management.

CLIMATE RISK INTELLIGENCE

Precision Risk Mapping:

With Technical Assistance from BII in partnership with CRS, a Physical Risk Exposure Heat Map was conducted across all our branches.

Localized Context: We track 13 specific hazards, including Heat Stress, River Flooding, Water Stress, and Cyclones, across every district in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.

Pre-Site Sensitivity: Before appraisal, our system flags priority hazards based on short-term (up to 2040) and medium-term (up to 2050) risk scores, ensuring our technical due diligence is focused on the right risks.

Advanced climate and hazard mapping enables proactive risk identification, localized assessments, and informed lending decisions across vulnerable geographies.

CLIMATE VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT

The Climate Vulnerability Checklist

Our “High-Touch” model includes a mandatory field-level assessment. During the site visit, loan officers use our Climate Vulnerability Checklist to identify specific structural weaknesses:

Flood Risk: Assessment of plinth heights, drainage functionality, and proximity to water bodies.

Heat Stress: Evaluation of roofing materials (RCC vs. Tin/Asbestos) and ventilation features to identify "high heat gain" homes.

Water & Drought: Identification of primary water sources and signs of seasonal water stress.

Cyclone & Coastal Risk: Testing wall strength, foundation quality, and roof tie-down/anchoring mechanisms.

Climate Vulnerability Assessment

A structured field-level assessment framework that identifies climate vulnerabilities and housing risks before loan approval, ensuring long-term asset resilience.

CLIMATE ADAPTATION FRAMEWORK

Implementing Adaptation Measures

Based on the checklist results, VHFL guides borrowers toward specific Adaptation Measures funded through our home improvement and construction loans:

Resilient Structures: Raising plinths above 0.6m, using compacted soil for bases, and installing RCC roofs with low pitch to reduce wind uplift.

Passive Cooling: Applying cool-roof finishes (reflective paint/tiles), installing ventilated roof gaps, and planting nature-based windbreaks.

Resource Management: Promoting "Twin-pit" latrines to reduce groundwater contamination and retrofitting non-functional rainwater harvesting systems.
